Women leaders within Uganda’s political space have defended Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa amid ongoing discussions on parliamentary leadership, urging women to continue pursuing leadership opportunities without feeling sidelined.

The National Chairperson of the Women’s Council of Uganda, Faridah Kibowa, has called on women across the country to actively seek leadership positions instead of feeling excluded from national politics.

Speaking during a discussion on parliamentary leadership, Kibowa said the ruling National Resistance Movement government has over the years created opportunities for women to participate in leadership.

She said women should not feel discouraged if they do not occupy the positions of Speaker or Deputy Speaker of Parliament, but should instead continue supporting leaders entrusted with advancing the women’s agenda.

“I don’t want women of this country to say that we have been sidelined because we have not taken the position of the Speaker or Deputy Speaker,” Kibowa said.
